You’re a savvy girl, and you know that what you wear is how you express your personality. So naturally, when it’s time to pack up and head off to college, the first thing on your mind is what you’re going to take with you. With a full course load, a part-time job, a social life at school and back home, and other extracurriculars thrown into the mix — keeping everything organized becomes even more of a challenge. But don’t worry — we’ve done some legwork for you.
The best backpacks for college girls are solid, functional, and fashionable, which is why it’s important to take your time when choosing one. Choosing the right backpack will help you stay organized during the school year so you can focus on what’s really important — having fun!
1. What to look for when choosing a backpack
When you’re choosing a backpack, there are a few things to consider:
1) how much you plan to carry,
2) how long you plan to use the backpack for, and
3) how you plan to carry the backpack. These all influence the size and weight of the backpack and thus the type of bag you should choose. Before you get into the main bowl, we want to talk about the benefits and drawbacks of each.
PRO: Higher Durability
First up: durability. While the backpack you choose should withstand the rough-and-tough college life you’ll encounter (and that includes campus life, too), if you go overpacked, the backpack you carry in your hand may not be so sturdy when you get home. No worries, we will help. The most basic option is the ones that come in water-resistant versions. Although they are technically serving a purpose, they are not exactly functional for day-to-day life. Keep in mind, however, that when you get home, you usually use these packs to carry all of your stuff, not just your backpack. More on that in a minute.
PRO: Easily Slacks Off
Beyond lightweight, durable options with pockets, we want you to have no problem putting the backpack (and essentials) in and taking it out again. (Insert snicker here.) Pulling it open, through the vast expanse of your backpack in the appropriate pocket, can be quite the ordeal. Should your thumb or first finger get tired (looking at you, graduation), there are molle options, but be forewarned this isn’t the option for everyone (shudder). Then there’s the fact that you have to reach back in order to “pull out” an essential item.
CON: Lacks Durability
But college isn’t all about lugging around heavy bags. It’s ideal for getting to class without stress, expressing yourself, and also may have you miss out on that first-born child (RIP Andrew). While the backpack you choose should be easily foldable, it is still a sizable item. When you go off-course, the fabric acts as a buffer.
2. The best backpacks for college girls
The best backpacks for college girls are those which are mix of style and functionality. It should be spacious enough to carry all your essentials, fashionable and durable. If you’re an avid traveler and take your school work with you everywhere, the backpack you choose should also be comfortable to wear throughout the day. The trick is to find a balance of features and function, so the backpack can fit your entire day’s worth of work. The backpack you choose should also be comfortable to wear throughout the day.
Since the seasons are different everywhere you go, the backpack you choose should be adaptable to the climate. If the weather is scorching hot and muggy throughout the day, the backpack you choose should have plenty of pockets to keep your hands warm. If the weather is below freezing, you should consider doing more activity in the comfort of your own car. This way, you won’t have to worry about your hands getting too sweaty while trying to find parking.
Going for a hike is an activity that doesn’t get old. So why not pack the hiking essentials? Obviously, you’re going to need a nice pair of shoes to navigate the varying terrain, but you can really get lost in the woods if you don’t pack the right shoes. Zoom today can be tricky if you don’t have a hiking backpack for your feet. Fortunately, when it comes to shoes, there are many options to choose from. From sandals and hiking boots to dressy Converse and dressy Chuck Taylor All-Stars, there are plenty of hiking shoes out there to choose from. These shoes are the right solution for the hiking trek you’re about to embark on.
Beyond shoes, the kind of clothes you pack for college are less crucial than the way in which you pack them. Expressing your personality is one thing, but getting your outfit together in the morning is another.
3. Backpack accessories that can make your life easier
Backpacks are so versatile. They can be used for school, travel, hiking, and even work. As backpacks continue to gain popularity, more and more accessories are popping up to help you use your backpack for more than just carrying books. Some of my favorite accessories are:
We live in an age where minimalism is preached, and when it comes to your backpack, that means keeping essentials to a minimum.
It wouldn’t be a 2020 backpack list without a cozy sweater. Whether going out on snowy sidewalks, kicking back outside on a Tuesday afternoon, or lounging through a class at the local university — finding the perfect sweatshirt or sweater is something everyone should know how to do.
For fashion forward girls like yourself, nothing says self-expression like well-constructed sweaters. And when deciding what type of that sweater, why not get your creative juices flowing and add a statement to your quilt? It’ll definitely add personality to your wardrobe without costing you an arm and leg.
I may be a traditionally female, but I don’t restrict my wardrobe to just one type. When it comes to footwear, finding something that’s versatile helps keep everything in check. In addition to running trainers, Chelsea boots or oxfords are a go-to for those looking for a casual yet comfortable pair of kicks.
But you don’t have to run to rock an oxford. “Man, girl, boy,” that’s just four words that will lead to your crush on the shoe, and that’s only if all of the following criteria are at point one — there’s at least one pair of shoes you love.
How would you feel if someone told you two months into a relationship that they were taking you out for a nice dinner and you were basically obligated to agree? Or that the person who proposed to you simply said, “Alright. Let’s plan it.”. That night, the person had already told you exactly what they wanted and what they expected, and they wanted to keep their word.
4. How to pack a backpack you can carry all day without hurting your back
It’s important to pack your backpack properly if you want to be able to carry it all day without hurting your back. A properly packed bag will be balanced and won’t swing around as you walk. The Editors of Pack Your Own agree: Carry on your backpacks are more functional and less costly than carrying on your shoulders. Going authority-free is also better than nothing, but we rely on our bags to hold our essentials if we need them. Put those essentials in a backpack — even if you carry them on your shoulders. They fit just as well without having to sacrifice functionality.
Buying the right backpack is also important. If your college is more stringent about the type of backpack you can bring, you won’t want to worry about this while you are still enrolled in school. Once you graduate, you’re on your own for making sure you have a backpack that stands up to rigorous collegiate sessions, tough classes, and also getting yourself to class and back safely. Luckily, all of our backpack reviews come with yearly laptop bans. What does this mean? Well, if you don’t have a whole year to get you and your essentials together on campus, we normally don’t rent backpacks to students. That means you’ll be ok being confined to your own room or apartment once you graduate.
There are a variety of backpack options, through different companies. In North America, there is BackPacks, which sells a variety of waterproof backpacks, and REI, which just introduced the spec-ed Hillel backpack, which is the heaviest option available at the moment. If you prefer a smaller, more portable pack, there are several options available. The Pacific Air X-Backpack (pictured above), one of our favorites, has a secret compartment to stash clothes in addition to your laptop, as well as a side grab for keys and other essentials.
5. How to organize your backpack so you don’t have to live out of a laundry basket while at school
As someone who made the mistake of not organizing my backpack at the beginning of the year, let me tell you that living out of a laundry basket is NOT fun. Here are some tips so you can organize your backpack so you can keep it together this semester.
I never used to wear a backpack even once while I was at university. Back when I had to maintain a 6-figure finance job, going out for food was part of my schedule, and minimalism was important to me.
But one day in March, while staying with a family member and his toddler, I found myself taking the backpack off after dinner and carrying it around the house with me whenever I needed to grab something that needed to be tucked away. And I had no idea why I was doing these crazy things…
So after thinking about my packing list, I realized that I was taking the backpack (not the organizer) because I didn’t want to have a backpack. I wanted to be able to pack my important documents or books and leave the rest of my shit at the door, and I thought that a backpack would entice me into keeping this plan.
But I was mistaken. While a backpack might make you more likely to pack it out for other apartments or less likely to pack it at all, a small organizer is actually going to be more practical for you than a backpack, especially in the context of school.
